Kenya Equities Market Update – Week Ending 20th June 2025

Kenya’s equities market registered a downward trend during the week under review, reversing the previous week’s rally. The Nairobi All Share Index (NASI) led the losses, declining by 1.3%. Other key indices also softened:

  • NSE 10: down 0.4%
  • NSE 25: down 0.3%
  • NSE 20: down 0.2%

Despite the weekly declines, the year-to-date (YTD) returns remain positive:

  • NASI: +16.2%
  • NSE 20: +10.6%
  • NSE 10: +9.0%
  • NSE 25: +8.8%

Key Drivers of the Market:

🔻 Losses were mainly driven by declines in large-cap stocks:

  • Safaricom (-2.8%)
  • KCB Group (-2.1%)
  • Absa Bank Kenya (-1.3%)

🔺 However, the market found some support from gains in select large-cap counters:

  • Standard Chartered Bank Kenya (+2.6%)
  • East African Breweries Ltd (EABL) (+2.2%)
  • Diamond Trust Bank (DTB-Kenya) (+2.1%)

Market Activity:

  • Weekly equities turnover dropped sharply by 58.7% to USD 19.1 million from USD 46.1 million the previous week.
  • Total YTD turnover now stands at USD 405.3 million.

Foreign Investor Activity:

Foreign investors remained net buyers for the second consecutive week, with a net inflow of USD 3.2 million, up from USD 2.3 million the prior week. This reduced their YTD net selling position to USD 28.0 million.
